First, an announcement - I'm starting a small press publishing company.
You can read more about it here. Second, I'd love to hear your proposals, and possibly publish your work, because I'd really like to get my own work off the front page as quickly as possible. I'm currently accepting proposals for books and minicomics, although my book budget is already mostly committed, but I have plenty of room for minicomics(they'll be professionally printed, not photocopied). Details on
proposals are here, and information about my
creator focused business model is here. Third, this is my first
open call for submissions to be published as an anthology of illustrated experiences and stories about early internet fandom. I'd love to hear from you!
The current version is pasted below, but please refer to the website for the
most updated information. I Was a Teenage Gargoyle
an illustrated anthology about adolescence and fandom. This is an anthology about growing up, about teenagers, about being a nerd, about friends and about early internet fandom. It is specifically inspired by an animated series from Disney called Gargoyles that aired from 1994 to 1997. In the late 90′s, a healthy and active community sprang up around this show and conventions were organized, friends were made, fandom drama happened and perhaps for the first time for many of its participants – we really belonged somewhere.
There were many other fandoms like it, spread out over Geocities sites(when they were still “addresses”!), over bulletin boards and IRC chatrooms. A generation of kids grew up making connections with strangers over a single shared interest.
I’m looking for illustrated stories or comics about your experiences with early internet fandom communities. This anthology will be about your first loves, about your awkward teenage years, about dial-up modems, about the fan conventions, and about friendship.
Note: we’re not looking for fan comics or fan art – we’re looking for stories about YOU and the place of fandom in your life, whether good or bad, or just more interesting.
In addition to comics and stories, we are also looking to assemble a small gallery of fan characters that will also be printed in the anthology! Older drawings are welcome - what we're looking for is some insight into why these characters exist as fandom alter egos.
Fan Character Gallery:
What do our fan characters – the stylized representations of us as gargoyles, fairies or anthropomorphic creatures – reveal about what we thought(or think) about ourselves? We’re looking for annotated full body drawings and description of your fan-character and a picture of you(just a head portrait)! Please submit your fan character drawings on a white background.
Details:
* 300dpi, black and white or color is fine.
* Maximum page count is about 6 pages, but if you have grand ideas, let’s talk. A bunch of one-page comics would be great too!
* The final size of the anthology will be 5″x7.5″, standard manga size.
* Please contact me first if you want to do full bleed images. It’ll most likely be fine, but expect to provide an additional 1/2 inch around your work that will be trimmed off.
* TIFF or PDF format is preferred. CMYK color model if you feel very strongly about your colors being matched.
* Sex is a fine topic, but let’s avoid porn.
Submissions will be included in the book based on originality and quality. All submissions will be likely be included in a companion website to the anthology. I reserve the right to not post any submissions I deem inappropriate.
Accepted contributors will receive a free copy of the book, and be able to purchase additional copies at wholesale cost.
There will most likely be no profit from this book, however, any profits will go to a charity(to be decided) supporting girls in art and technology.
Submissions are welcome at sawdustpress@gmail.com. Accepted submissions will be notified on a rolling basis(the earlier, the better!).
Deadline to submit a idea proposal: September 1st, 2011
Deadline for thumbnails or rough drafts or works in progress: October 1st, 2011
